Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Certification

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a global initiative in promoting the growth and use of sustainable palm products. RSPO is a not-for-profit organization that unites stakeholders (i.e., Bankers & Investors, Consumer Goods Manufacturers, Environmental or Nature Conservation NGOs, Oil Palm Growers, Palm Oil Processors & Traders, Retailers, and Social or Developmental NGOs) of the oil palm industry to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil. Each stakeholder group is giving equal rights to bring their agendas to the “roundtable” to work together towards a common objective and making decisions by consensus on sustainable palm oil.

Two third-party certification standards are being published by RSPO. Palm oil mill and its oil palm plantations, and the downstream supply chain industries can arrange for evaluation of compliance to the applicable standard by an RSPO approved certification body, through the RSPO Certification System.

  1. RSPO Sustainable Palm Oil Production
RSPO Standard for Sustainable Palm Oil Production applicable to plantation and palm oil mills. It outlines a series of principles, criteria, indicators and guidance to be used by oil palm producers to implement sustainable production practices.

The standard addresses the legal, economic, environmental and social requirements of producing sustainable palm oil.

  2. RSPO Supply Chain Certification Standard
The RSPO Supply Chain Certification Standard containing the requirements for companies in the downstream industries (such as food, oleo chemical, bio-fuel, and power supply) looking for certification and for the Certification Body to verify compliance.

The standard describes a series of requirements use to trace, track, record, and report the amount of certified sustainable palm oil being processed, consumed and traded by the downstream industries, through one (or several) of the four supply chain models – Identity Preserved (IP), Segregation (SG), Mass balance (MB), Book & Claim (BC).

The certified company can use the RSPO Trademark in accordance to the RSPO Rules on Market Communications & Claims. The RSPO Trademark on consumer goods packaging offers a well-informed choice for consumer to identify and differentiate palm-derived products that are being produced with the palm oil from certified sustainable sources.
